Proposed Medical College in Jolaibari: CM Manik Saha Calls for Well-Planned Township and Modern Healthcare Infrastructure
Agartala, Tripura: Tripura Chief Minister Prof. (Dr.) Manik Saha has stressed the need to develop Jolaibari in South Tripura as a well-planned township around the proposed medical college, with modern infrastructure, improved healthcare services and better educational facilities.
A high-level meeting was held at Conference Hall No. 2 of the state Secretariat to review the proposal for establishing the medical college under the Pradhan Mantri Jan Vikas Karyakram (PMJVK). The proposed institution is planned to be based on Santirbazar District Hospital.
During the meeting, the Chief Minister directed the officials concerned to prepare and submit a detailed project report (DPR) at the earliest and take the necessary steps to initiate the project without unnecessary delay.
At the beginning of the meeting, Kiran Gitte, Secretary to the Chief Minister, delivered an illustrated presentation outlining the proposed medical college’s planning, infrastructure requirements, the existing condition of Santirbazar District Hospital and key aspects of project implementation. Following the presentation, Dr. Saha reviewed the proposal and provided guidance to the officials.
The Chief Minister emphasised that the development plan should extend beyond the construction of the medical college and hospital. He said Jolaibari should emerge as a properly planned township with modern civic facilities and an environment conducive to education, healthcare and overall development.
He suggested considering facilities such as a yoga centre, an auditorium, a football ground and an indoor badminton hall to support students’ physical, cultural and personal development. He also stressed the need to provide adequate facilities for students, doctors, medical staff and other employees associated with the institution.
Dr. Saha said the proposed infrastructure must be modern, efficient and scientifically planned. Equal importance should be given to the quality of medical education, hospital infrastructure, healthcare delivery and facilities for patients.
Focus on strengthening Santirbazar District Hospital
The meeting also discussed expanding the capacity and scope of healthcare services at Santirbazar District Hospital. The Chief Minister stressed that the development of the proposed medical college must go hand in hand with the modernisation of the existing hospital and improvements in its medical facilities.
The proposal to admit 100 students in each academic year was also discussed during the meeting. If implemented as planned, the institution could expand opportunities for medical education and help improve access to advanced healthcare services in South Tripura.
The Chief Minister underlined the importance of coordination among departments and officials at every stage, from planning and preparation of the DPR to construction and implementation. He urged the authorities to complete the necessary preparatory work promptly so that further action on the project could begin.
The meeting was attended by Minority Welfare Minister Shukla Charan Noatia, department director Nirmal Adhikari, the South Tripura District Magistrate and senior officials from various departments. The participants shared their views and suggestions regarding the proposed medical college and the supporting infrastructure required for its development.
The proposed medical college in Jolaibari is expected to become an important initiative for strengthening medical education and healthcare services in South Tripura. The broader township development plan also highlights the government’s focus on creating an integrated centre for education, healthcare and community development.
